#ChucksAndPearls: Women don fashion trend in support of VP Harris

WASHINGTON (WREX) — The hashtag #ChucksAndPearls trended on social media platforms like Twitter and Instagram with a deeper meaning behind a normal fashion statement.

In support of Vice President Kamala Harris's historic inauguration, millions of women, specifically Black women, wore pearl necklaces and Converse shoes. But what's the meaning behind Chucks and pearls?

Harris is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha, the nation's first sorority for Black women, which was established in 1908 at Howard University, a Historically Black College or University. Harris, a graduate of Howard herself, is the first HBCU graduate to run on a major party's presidential ticket.

According to Gwyn Gulley, President of Pi Gamma Omega's Rockford chapter, pearls represent the founders of each of the original nine Black sororities and fraternities known as the Divine Nine. The pearls, which Harris wore on Inauguration Day herself, symbolize professionalism, class and grace, according to Gulley.

"With the hashtag and everyone jumping on board, not just African American women or members of the Divine Nine, it showed unity and support for Kamala," Gulley said while she, herself, wore her pearls.

Gulley said seeing Harris taking the Oath of Office as the nation's Vice President was an emotional sight for her, as a Black woman herself.

"It brought tears to my eyes when she was sworn in. I could only imagine the pride that she felt," Gulley said. "Just because all that we've been through and all that we continue to go through, to see that happen and for her to make history today it was very exciting."

As for Harris's Chuck Taylor Converse, Harris was often seen on the campaign trail sporting the comfortable shoes.
